Here are some comments from a FB thread similar (Thread started 26th May 23 )

Question?: I’m curious about the people that has or had spasticity/high tone. How long did it take to go away or get better etc? I have it a good bit in my arm and leg. My arm is almost all the way good except for my shoulder. I take medication for it. I get discouraged at times with it but I remind myself that I am blessed on how far I have come. I’m very thankful my stroke wasn’t any worse than it was. But the spasticity does make me feel down at times so I wanted to hear from people that have and are currently experiencing it.

    Nice explanation from FB

STROKE in Siddha Ayurveda Varma Science

According to Ayurveda and Siddha sastra Stroke (pakshakadha) is a vata Roga .

When the Vital energy(prana) is blocked in the energy path called Nadis the Stroke occurs. This can be due to multiple reason
    ? Hridrogam -Heart deceases
    ?Block in nadis (nerves)
?Marma Abigadham – Trauma to Vital parts of body
    ?Bleeding and blocks in brain
    1)Stambidha Vatam (Hemorrhagic stroke)
    2) Njarambu adapu vatam( Ischemic stroke)

Mainly in Pakshagadham (stroke) The idanadi (controls left side) or pingala nadi (path way of energy which controls right side) or both are affected . This will cause complications in both sides of body depending on the Nadi(nerve) which is affected. In our body there are 72000 such mani nadis through which the pranic energy flows . Nadis run throughout our body from one Varmam(vital point ) to other such 1008 varmam points are there in our body .

    Say for example

According to chintarmani marma sastra texts there are 25 main marmas in head(Varma Guru nool) ..
Another text explains about 37 marmas .Another Book called Varma oli explain 108 marma points in head . the varma injury to 6 Padumarmas of head cause immediate deth due to block in nadis or internal bleeding ,Injury to Todumarmam will cause Death slowly or will cause mental problems , stroke . Main Marma points in head are
    Kondaikolli varmam
    Cherumkolli varmam
    Manjakalam
    Sunnambukalam
    Vettilakalam
    Talapa varmam
    Murthi varmam
    Rudrakalam
    Porcha kalam
    Poigakalam
    Pidarikalam
    Penkuzhi varmam
    Chuziyadi varmam
    Kaduku varmam
    Charudhi varmam
    Ladamurthi varma
    Tilasakalam
    Minvettikalam
Energy imbalance or block of energy in this marmas(vital points) and nadis will lead to Stroke and other health problems

One of the main cause of stroke is Head injury in past . The injury to head in the childhood or young age will cause stroke in future ..this is because of the affected vital marma points in head . The energy or blood flow in the head gradually decrease and will cause stroke in future.

There are 84 type of Vata rogas in Siddha science stroke is also considered as Vata roga

When we come to the treatment side of stroke it differ from patient to patient depending on there body ,health, strength, culture, habits, food they eat, weather, sex, age.etc

In Siddha Ayurveda marma chikitsa treayment mainly focusing on correcting the flow of enery(prana) blood and to regain the lost strength of nerve by

    External therapy
? Sarvanga adangal massage (Which is a tipe of massage which will correct the flow of prana in body by stimulating 108 vitel points and 72000 nadia in our body)
    ?Shiro dhara
    ?Nasyam
    ?Talam
    ?Kizhi
    ?Njavara teppu
    ?pizichil
    ?shiro basthi…etc

    And Internal medicinea like

Some of the medicine used are Navakanda chudal tailam ,Amukura pavu kashayam, adhimadhura pavu kashyam, valiyangadi kashyam, padu marma kashayam, marma kashyam, kukkil nimbadhi kashyam, Amukura churnam, kozhi podi ,marma gulika, chayilya gulika, sarvanga tailam, kayarajanga tailam, uzhinja mukkutu, kaya sarvangam, kozhi kashyam, kozhi vattu ,mutta vattu, udumbu vattu, kayathirumeni oils..etc such 1000 of herbal animal and mineral origin medicines are described in Siddha and Ayurveda sastra for different type of strokes

Some of the ancient books which we refer for treatment are
    -Agastya vaidhya shadhakam
    -Vatanoi nidanam

    Bathing

[3/23, 7:25 PM] Hardeep Sodhi: Message from Prateek on our TG group :

    ___

All the stroke survivors who have affected hand, please tell me how do you do your daily care stuff like taking bath and especially cutting nails?

I am currently getting help from my parents but would love to know if someone has found a way out of this dependency ??

    ___

If any has any suggestions and experiences to share please put here, thanks.

[3/23, 7:46 PM] Aparna Bhattacharjee: My experience-

    1. Firstly if you can walk upto the bathroom, fantastic. If no take help & enter.

    2. Do not lock the bathroom door from inside till you don’t become confident ( which will come later)

    3. Sit & take a bath. Wherever on a stool or the commode.

    4. Open the tap. Even if you cannot just try 5 times you enter the bathroom. After a few days, your hand & fingers will move on its own with the tap. Move it clockwise AND anticlockwise.

    5. Use the affected hand to hold the mug, with the good hand to assist it from below & pour water. Take small quantities of water initially.

    6. Use your affected hand to soap any one part of your body… a little part of the non affected hand…or one leg..or the small knee….or even the small palm will do.. Rub rub rub. As much as possible.

    7. Brushing your teeth – Dentists say ideally one should brush for 3 FULL minutes to maintain oral hygiene. Brush at least for a few seconds with affected hand.

These are tried & tested methods by me. I achieved quite a bit doing all this.

    Good Luck Prateek.

    Krishna Patel:

I am also getting help from parents, my effected hand it totally paralysed. I too would love any knowledge or tips that would help. Thank you in advance.

    Hardeep Sodhi:

Re taking bath, this may provide some ideas ..

    Priyanka Guru:

I too had a headache for two days which wouldn’t go with painkillers… Had told my husband we’d need to get it checked the next day if it didn’t go .. but next day early morning i had a hemorrhage and collapsed with fits

    Vishnu Agarwal:

i too had severe headache from several days, and it wud aggrevate when i bend down to pick smthing.

the day it haopened, i hadreturned from office due to bad headache, its a clear symptom

    Jennifer Menezes:

Yup in my case it was clearly stress

    Vishnu Agarwal:

i too was stressed in my job

plus, i was overweight but anaemic / low hemoglobin

I am also genetically pre disposed to stroke, with gene called MTFHR.

if any1 has money n want to chk if thy are predisposed, they can get this test done, which costs 15K

    AKSHAY Patil:

I too have MTHFR gene mutation , got stroke in last December @ age of 29

Though doctors generally don’t recommend this test even if you are a sibling of stroke survivor as cost is high and you can lead a very normal life Even if you have this gene mutation

    Hardeep Sodhi:

    https://www.apollodiagnostics.in/darrang/test/mthfr-methyl-tetra-hydro-folate-reductase-gene-mutation-homocysteinemia

Interesting. Cost seems to be much less now….

Genetic predisposition is an established risk factor for stroke. At the same time, it is ‘ non-modifiable’ so while it is good to be aware, it is better to be more focused on the modifiable factors.

    Priyanka Guru:

The MTHFR gene has been associated with lots of other conditions… Having a particular gene mutation only increases the risk and honestly one single gene is never responsible for a particular condition .. it’s a inter play of many genes and environment together both internal as well as external… (Except of course in case of genetic disorders )

    AKSHAY Patil:

Yes had hyper homocysteine when had stroke

Also if you are affected with this gene mutation having a diet that provides sufficient vitamin b12 is necessary or take B12 supplements

    Banasri Gupta:

Banasri from Bangalore, Stroke on August 2020. Main reason was low Hemoglobin. I used to gasp climbing up the stairs.

But one weird habit I developed 4-5 months before the stroke – I used to eat lot of fennel seeds after every meal.

Some recent discussions on our Telegram group :

    Hardeep Sodhi:
Have seen this video before. While symptoms are as said, it is not necessary that they occur 30 days before. Any time they occur, it is an emergency to be investigated further immediately. As for severe , unexplained hiccups that is a sign of stroke happening at that time itself, usually along with other symptoms…

    https://www.womansday.com/health-fitness/wellness/news/a51566/the-scary-reason-why-you-shouldnt-ignore-your-hiccups/

    Prateek Luthra:
In my case, I had a severe headache a month before stroke but the doctor thought of dengue being a reason. Please check your or your close one’s blood pressure in case of severe headache, it might be due to thickening of the blood. Very less are aware of that. I was destined to get a stroke that’s why I went to the wrong doctor.
    स्ट्रोक सर्वाइवर द्वारा जनहित में जारी। ????

    Hardeep Sodhi:
Indeed, as said all unusual signs need to be checked – the problem with stroke is that many symptoms are easily ignored as transient, or misdiagnosed. Rest, as you say, is destiny. But even within that let us find the strength and positivity to not only recover but inspire others as well. ..

    r k:
Indeed, my father also suffered a very subtle hand weakening. He could lift grocery bags that day. Even though we went to 2 different doctors but it was mis-diagnosed even after having a high Bp. The condition deteriorated further and we couldn’t stop a stroke which could have been easily preventable.

    Somiya Pulkit Mehrotra G-52:
This happened to me also, I got a headache and two days, I was lying on the bed, didn’t go out, then my MIL took me to a different doctor, and I got many injections, etc to get weakness and all, but still I had a severe headache and I was having dizziness. My aunt proposed I go to a different doctor(Neuro) and then I got a brain stroke after 4 days. That’s why, I always tell that if somebody gets a severe headache, we should go to a good doctor.

    Jennifer Menezes:
Mine also was same..i had bad headaches due to a malformation and that was causing the headache. But it was concluded as a viral fever and MRI wasn’t taken…within few days I had a hemmorhage..

    Prabhakaran:
Mine also the headache was diagnosed as viral fever(covid)
.infact the doctor was not wrong.bcoz I had all covid symptoms too. Latter had ischemic stroke. Even at that time also neuro doctors not used TpA injection with in the golden window period.
They feared that it could have turned out to be hemmorage due to covid.

    Anjali Taneja:
My husband was also having headache since two three days he ignored and had headache related tablets.
Doctors told that it was the indication , it was too late to know the symptoms.

    Priyanka Guru:

I had to look deep inside and think through what that meant to me. I have been fortunate enough to have found a highly skilled neuro PT in my area to work with. I chatted with a couple of my stroke buddies here. Reviewed Dr. Tobias YouTube video on the 18 month piece and concluded. If my neuro PT will continue with me. I will not quit.

Bullshit I’m 2 years out and now able to slowly open my fingers with repetition it will get easier

There was a case of a man who 30 YEARS out started swimming for weight loss, noticed movememt in his hand, went back to therapy and regained use of his hand. It is possible, it’s just an uphill battle with slow progress. Don’t give up, activate your neuroplasticity, and put in the hard work.

It is a business. If they thought your insurance would pay they would tell you to never give up. keep working on your own
    Nikki Kaur

Sandy Flanders don’t let them or the stroke win. Show them how strong you are. Show stroke who is boss.

Nikki Kaur I will try. I prefer to be the boss !!

I don’t understand why therapists and doctors can say something like that. I remember i asked my therapist if I would ever walk, he didn’t tell me that I wouldn’t, he told me that it was possible. 3.9 years out i can walk unassisted and my arm, hand and fingers work, not 100% but they work. Never give up!!
    Sandy Flanders

Tony Perez that is so strange since the statistics tell us that the majority will walk again. I am really into evidence based medicine, I don’t want their opinions
    Tony Perez

Susan Paré, there is ALWAYS hope. I’m still making improvements. Never give up.
    Terri Quindlen

Cr9ck of crap. Medical professionals are misinformed when it comes to stroke recovery. You will continue to improve as long as you are alive. Don’t give up and don’t stop trying just because a misinformed medical professional tells you you are done. Usually this means your insurance no longer wants to cover therapy. Go online and find therapy groups and continue to work on your recovery.

Before my stroke in October I had major surgery in my arm (not related to the stroke). That surgeon told me that he could just fix aspects of my arm but that I would never get my wrist mobility back. I looked at him and said “that’s what physio is for”. And I was right. I am still getting more and more mobility back and my brain is healing more everyday from my stroke. Don’t let anyone say you can’t. Just keep trying.

this is the trial that was discussed yesterday. ( Zoom session, 5 th Dec. 2021) ..as can be seen there is a huge and long-term difference between a control group and that subjected to CIMT per protocol set out in the experiment…link to the article is :

    Shubh:

Acupressure and acupuncture both are different?

    Hardeep Sodhi:

One major difference…accupuncture uses needles stuck at various points, including in the scalp, accupressure uses pressure at certain points…similar to Varma therapy I think. We had a session on Varma awhile ago and think Vardhini ji here is an expert in same. Maybe she can also comment in.

    Vardhini Thirugnanam:

Acupunture and acupressure are similar in principle but different in methodology

Varmam is the same of acupressure.we activate similar points with the help of our hand and no needles etc.,in acupuncture the use needles to activate the points

    Prabhakaran:

On the alternate medicine topic. My therapist have tried accupuncture along with physiotherapy for shoulder and elbow recovery and gained good results.accupuncture has reduced tightness in the fingers. Due to that I am able to produce some movements.unfortunately it doesn’t work for finger extension

    AKSHAY Patil:

    That’s great to hear Prabhakaran

Was it scalp acupuncture or acupuncture for hand muscles?

    Prabhakaran:

Only on hand muscles.even in the first session itself I realised the difference

    I am not sure

Accupuncture used by only accupuncture doctor will work. Because physiotherapist knows better about muscles. Hence accupuncture by physiotherapist will be a good option.

    Hardeep Sodhi:

Have you come across any physiotherapist practicing accupuncture ?

    Prabhakaran:

Weekly once for 3 weeks. Now it has been stopped because of good movements in shoulder and elbow

Yes. My therapist undergone certificate course in accupuncture in Bangalore

    Hardeep Sodhi:

Same PT did accupuncture and physiotherapy ? How do you conclude improvement was due accupuncture and not physiotherapy ?

    Prabhakaran:

Initially I was not able to move shoulder for excercises. After accupuncture some movements were initiated and we capitalized on them to do excercises.

    Hardeep Sodhi:

Interesting.. so perhaps acupuncture completed some brain ‘ circuits’ that Physiotherapy was not able to, you think ?

    Prabhakaran:

    Yes

    Anuradha:

Yes , our physiotherapist is acupuncture specialist .

    Hardeep Sodhi:

OK so acupuncture helps in some cases and not in others..we have had similar sharings earlier as well. Since there is no research based data, no one knows why it works sometimes and doesn’t others. Which is the problem with most alternative methods. It would also depend upon the practitioner I suppose.

That even mainstream Physiotherapists are practicing acupuncture is interesting – I’d have thought they’d be hesitant to suggest or try non-evidence based practices….

    Anuradha:

Also it looks scary also that needles been poked into scalp , this is one of the reasons that we stopped .

    Hardeep Sodhi:

Yes needles in the scalp do make one nervous

Positivity and faith is always the means to recovery, which is evident in all the chats we have had with stroke warriors till date. including the great chat we had yesterday with Dave. Even small recoveries lead to positive loops encouraging the affected to make more efforts and so even those should be marked and celebrated. As Brisa says in her “Pinky Moves” method.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5713240/

This seems like a comprehensive study of present research on acupuncture. Interestingly, it claims that even WHI recommends it as alternative / complementary treatment for stroke. Don’t know if true…

    Sandip Luharuwalla:

I am on with Accupunter sessions weekly thrice from 6th September till date…. missed 4 sessions till date. Scalp as well as left neck, shoulder, back, hand and leg. I am experiencing positive improvements.

Have stopped physio since February 2021. Not experiencing any spasticity, nor taking any allopathy medication though continuing with Ayurvedic and Homeopathy medicine.

Accupunter Dr advice treatment for 6 months.

    Changes I observe?

    1. Walking, experiencing stability and strength. Recently manage to go for Tiger Reserve Nature Walk with friends both up and down hill all by myself with support of a stick which was useful at limited occasions both up n down hill all myself ?.

    2. Started to experience a positive improvement in extension and flex on fingers.

    3. Experience overall muscle gain across my body. Impressive was visible gap at shoulder and hand joint got completely filled.

My instinct sees a reasonable improvement over next 3 months.

Rest is better left on All Mighty for his kind blessings ?

I am getting treated at Kolkatta
