Stroke and Coronavirus (Covid-19)

This article addresses in short the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on stroke aspects. This may be divided into two categories:

  1. Risk of a stroke affected getting Covid, and
  2. Risk of a Covid affected getting stroke

Risk of a stroke affected getting Covid

Stroke survivors usually have a greater risk of catching any infection. Many of them  already have comorbidities ( such as diabetes, high blood pressure, respiratory diseases ) or maybe elderly.

Hence stroke patients need to be extra careful and observe all necessary protocols such as sanitizing of stuff being brought into the home, masking up wherever necessary, and isolating them as much as possible to minimize the risk.

In India the second phase of the covid vaccine rollout covers people above 60 years of age or those between 45-60 years of age but with specified co-morbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes etc. Almost all the strokes patients would fall in one of these categories and so should be getting vaccinated early.

Risk of a Covid affected getting stroke

Many studies point to a greater risk of a covid patient getting a stroke. For example, this report in Science Daily on March 21 clearly pointed it out. In India as well, this article published in October 2020 itself had raised strong concerns about this aspect. Also, this article further elaborates on stroke risk for the covid affected.

The reasons of this high risk are :

  • Covid infections raise the clotting tendency of blood, which in turn raises risk of brain strokes due clothing in arteries supplying blood to the brain.
  • This clotting tendency continues for several weeks after Covid has been cured. So the risk of stroke to a covid infected patient remains for several weeks after he has been cured of covid itself.
  • Many covid patients have additional risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes etc.
  • Complications of covid itself – such as deterioration / failure of some organs such as heart, lungs, kidneys etc. may lead to a greater risk of stroke as well.

Generally, Covid patients are advised blood thinners now for about a one month after they are Covid free.

Hence a covid affected person has to take extra precautions to prevent stroke, even after he/she is Covid free. Of course for this it is all the more important that symptoms of a stroke happening be promptly recognized and fast action taken. Please refer to this article to be aware of stroke symptoms and understand the criticality of time when it happens.
